Meet Volpino's New Head Chef: Shane Smith

← Back to What's On

Thursday 16 April 2026

Big news at Volpino — we have a new head chef, and he is someone we have wanted in the kitchen for a long time.

Shane Smith is an old mate of ours and a seriously talented chef with plenty of Peninsula miles under his belt. Over the years he has cooked everywhere from The Rocks to Flinders Golf Club, and a fair bit in between, so he knows good produce, good food, and what locals actually want to eat.

We caught up with Shane for a quick chat.

So Shane, what should people know about you?

I like to keep things simple — fresh ingredients, proper flavour, and food people actually want to come back for. I have spent a lot of time cooking around the Peninsula, and I am very happy to now be at Volpino.

What do you love cooking most?

Fresh pasta is right up there. There is something very satisfying about making it by hand and keeping it honest. I also love working the grill, so I am looking forward to putting out some very good steaks.

What's changing on the menu?

You will start seeing more fresh handmade pastas on the printed menu, along with a few new starters that are a bit exciting without trying too hard — things like stuffed zucchini flowers and butterflied king prawns.

And for the regulars?

They have probably already noticed a few fresh changes coming through on the specials board. That is usually where we like to have a bit of fun.

Any final message for Volpino guests?

Come hungry. And do not get too attached to ordering the same thing every time.

Alongside Shane's new menu touches, our legendary Tuesday half-price pizza nights are also kicking off again in April (dine in only), which is another very good reason to drop by.

Safe to say, there is plenty happening at Volpino.
